10 Important Lessons Through Chandrika’s Shimla Getaway with Thrillophilia

10 Important Lessons Through Chandrika’s Shimla Getaway with Thrillophilia

When I say our Shimla trip was magical, I’m not exaggerating. From misty mountains to heart-pounding adventures and lovely moments, it was everything we had dreamed of and more. My partner and I were swept away by the charm of Himachal Pradesh, and now I’m here to help you plan your perfect getaway.

Through these 10 tips, I’ll take you through our journey and share some advice to make your trip just as incredible as ours.

Tip 1: Explore Manali Thoroughly

Manali is the gateway to your adventure, so don’t rush through it (we stayed a good four days in Manali). Spend time soaking in its beauty and visiting iconic spots like the Hadimba Devi Temple.

The temple, surrounded by towering deodar trees, felt serene, and we even tied a prayer thread together— a sweet, symbolic start to our trip. The Manu Temple is another must-visit, perched on a hill, offering panoramic views of the valley that took our breath away. And don’t skip Mall Road for some retail therapy. We strolled hand-in-hand, munching on hot momos and sipping spiced tea while picking up souvenirs.

Tip 2: Be Prepared for Adventure at Solang Valley

If you’re a thrill-seeker, Solang Valley is your playground. We tried everything from skiing to snowboarding, but the highlight was zorbing.

Imagine rolling down a snowy slope together, laughing uncontrollably— it’s as fun as it sounds! The valley’s beauty adds to the excitement, with its white peaks and sparkling snowfields. Wear warm, waterproof clothes and rent snow boots to stay comfortable.

Oh, and don’t forget your camera, the pictures will be priceless.

Tip 3: Don’t Miss Kasol’s Bohemian Vibes

Kasol is a delightful mix of tranquility and quirkiness. Take a stroll along the Parvati River— its crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings are soul-soothing. We visited the Kullu Shawl Factory, where I couldn’t resist buying a few colorful shawls.

My partner loved the visit to the Rabbit Farm, where we got to pet fluffy bunnies (and yes, we took a million pictures). Kasol’s cafes are also a must-visit. Try Israeli dishes like shakshuka or their famous lemon ginger honey tea— it’s perfect for the chilly weather.

Tip 4: Pack for Every Weather

Shimla and its surrounding areas are known for their unpredictable weather. We learned this the hard way when it started drizzling in Kufri, and we didn’t have an umbrella. Pack layers, including warm jackets, thermals, and rain gear. Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you plan to explore hilly terrains. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.

Tip 5: Relish the Romance in Shimla

Shimla is where romance truly blooms. Walk along the iconic Mall Road in the evening— it’s lit up beautifully, with the cool breeze adding to the charm. We also explored Lakkar Bazaar, known for its wooden crafts. My partner surprised me with a hand-carved keepsake that now sits on our mantel. If you’re a fan of old-world charm, visit the Christ Church and sit quietly in its peaceful ambiance.

Tip 6: Embrace Nature at Kufri

Kufri is a haven for nature lovers, and we couldn’t get enough of its valleys and wildlife. The Green Valley, with its dense cedar forests, was a sight to behold, while Hasan Valley and Fagu Valley offered the kind of peace that city life never can. The Himalayan Mini Zoo was a fun stop too, especially for animal lovers. Watching yaks and mountain goats up close was surprisingly delightful.

Take your time here, and let nature work its magic.

Tip 7: Try Local Himachali Food

Food is an integral part of any trip, and Himachal didn’t disappoint. We indulged in piping hot thukpa, momos, and trout curry. Don’t miss out on the local delicacy, siddu— it’s a steamed bread stuffed with fillings, and it pairs perfectly with ghee.

In Kasol, we tried desserts like apple pie at a riverside café, while Shimla’s street vendors served us spicy aloo tikki that was to die for.

Tip 8: Take Time for Spirituality

Manikaran is a must-visit for its famous hot springs and spiritual vibes. The Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara was a deeply moving experience. We sat by the hot springs, soaking in their warmth, and enjoyed a simple yet delicious langar meal. It’s a place that feels like a warm hug for your soul. Spend time here, even if spirituality isn’t your focus— it’s an experience that leaves a mark.

Tip 9: Plan for Road Trips and Scenic Drives

The winding roads of Himachal are an adventure in themselves. The drive from Manali to Kasol was dotted with lush greenery and quaint villages. We made several stops just to admire the views. The route to Kufri was equally mesmerizing, with mist-covered mountains and valleys. If you’re prone to motion sickness, make sure to carry medications. These drives are an integral part of the Himachal experience.
